STEP 1: Obtain California Dual Certification Both Multiple Subject (K-12) and Single Subject (9-12) in an academic area Contact the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) and request a California Teacher Certification Application Packet. The CCTC can be reached by telephone at (888) 921-2682 or online at http://www.ctc.ca.gov/. This packet should describe the requirements for each type of California certification. You must determine on your own what tests you must take in order to fulfill both certification requirements. Some of the tests, such as the MSAT, may be scheduled through the Educational Testing Services Web site (ETS). The MSAT may be taken in California only, but some of the other tests are offered in other states. Once you have received your California dual certification or know that the state of California is in the process of sending it to you, you may proceed to Step 2. STEP 2: Prepare for the studio teacher exam The studio teacher exam is a test on the child labor laws of California State. You must call or write to request a studio teacher application packet from: Department of Industrial Relations: Division of Labor Standards Enforcement Licensing & Registration Unit E-mail: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it The packet you receive should include a studio teacher application and a study guide for California child labor laws to help you prepare for the test. When you have your certifications in hand and you feel you are ready to take the exam, you may proceed to Step 3. STEP 3: Take the Studio Teacher exam In order to take the studio teacher exam, you must make an appointment with the DOL district office nearest you or, if you are from out of state, the one you choose. A list of those offices will be included in your studio teacher application packet. In order to make an appointment, your certification process must be complete. When you report to the exam, you must bring your completed studio teacher application as well as copies of both your California credentials. Upon completion of the exam, the office at which you took the exam will send your results to the Department of Industrial Relations in San Francisco (see above). Once you have completed the exam and know your results should have been sent, proceed to Step 4. STEP 4: Take the 12-hour Studio Teacher Workshop The San Francisco office may notify you of your studio teacher test results, but then again they may not. So it is up to you to call them. Be a polite pest. Once you have passed your test, you may sign up for the first available studio teacher workshop. This workshop is given only twice a year: once in the fall, and once in the spring. The dates are not planned far in advance; the dates are based on the number of applications collected at any given time. So, once again, do not leave it up to them to contact you. You must continue to contact them regarding the workshop dates so you can register and attend. Report to your workshop. Once you have completed the workshop, proceed to the final step. STEP 5: Wait for your Studio Teacher Certificate This may take from four to eight weeks. If more time than this passes, you may want, once again, to be a polite pest. This is not an official document and is intended for guidance only. Please advise us of any errors or discrepancies. For more specific information, please contact the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC).
